General information

The town of Pleven is situated in the middle part of the Danube hilly lowland, 160 km from the capital – Sofia, 320 km from the Black Sea and 30 km south from the Danube river. One can reach the town by the first-class road Sofia – Varna (Е83). The town population is about 135,000 people.
            The history of the town and the region dates back to thousands of years ago. The earliest evidences about human presence in the region are related to the end of the 5th millennium BC. In the beginning of the new era these lands became part of the Roman Empire.
            Pleven became famous mostly for its active participation in the war between Russia and Turkey in 1877-1878. The town was under siege for five months, and the bloodiest battles between the two belligerent empires – Russia and Turkey were conducted around it.
            Some of the most interesting landmarks of the town are the Historical Museum, the Panorama “Pleven Epopee”, the Wine Museum in the Kaylaka Park and the remains of Storgoziya Fortress.
            There is no analog of the Wine Museum in the country. Its uniqueness is based on the exposition and the services which it offers (degustation), as well as the fact that it is housed in in the country are also a part of the collection.a cave in the Kaylaka Park. The museum collection contains wines aged 30 to 90 years. 6 thousand bottles of contemporary wines from all makes and regions.
            Among the other interesting landmarks in Pleven are the Revival Complex, which preserves old buildings with unique architecture, the chapel-mausoleum “St. George the Victorious”, which is one of the symbols of the town, the museum house Tsar Osvoboditel, in which in 1977 the Russian Emperor Alexander the Second was received, etc.
Buses from Sofia: Departure from the Central bus station at intervals of 60 minutes. First bus – at 07:00 h, last bus – at 22:00 h. Duration of travel: 2 hours and 40 minutes approximately. One way ticket price: BGN 12.00.
            From the airport Sofia to the central bus station be traveled by metro. At the Serdika metro station need to change the metro line - line 2. The second stop is the Central Railway Station and the Central Bus Station.
